Solar Panel Blankets for 4WD

Shop solar panel blankets for 4WD touring, dual-battery charging and remote camping across Australia. This collection focuses on portable solar options that can be stored in a vehicle, unfolded at camp and positioned in clear sunlight while the 4WD remains parked in the shade.

Choosing a Solar Blanket for a 4WD

Start with your daily energy use and battery capacity. Camping fridges, lights, fans, water pumps, phones and communications equipment all draw from the battery; the blanket replenishes that energy when sunlight and system conditions allow.

  • Storage and weight: confirm the folded blanket, leads and controller fit safely in your touring setup.
  • Dual-battery compatibility: match the controller and charging method to the auxiliary battery chemistry and voltage.
  • Connectors: verify Anderson, MC4 or other plugs, polarity, cable size and fuse protection.
  • Lead length: allow enough cable to reach sunlight without excessive voltage drop or creating a trip hazard.
  • Weather and campsite use: follow the product instructions and protect connectors, controllers and batteries from water, dust, vehicle movement and sharp surfaces.

Solar Blanket vs Roof-Mounted Solar

A portable blanket can be moved as shade changes and packed away when not required. A fixed roof panel charges whenever sunlight reaches the vehicle and needs no campsite setup. For extended touring, the two formats can complement each other when the controller and system are designed for the combined array.

Controller and Battery Matching

Check the blanket's Voc, Isc and rated power against the controller's solar-input limits. Also confirm the charge profile suits the auxiliary battery. Browse MPPT solar controllers, lithium batteries and AGM batteries for compatible options.

4WD Solar Blanket FAQs

What wattage solar blanket do I need for a 4WD fridge?

There is no single wattage for every fridge. Calculate the fridge's daily watt-hours, add other loads, account for expected sunlight and losses, then choose enough solar and battery capacity for the conditions.

Can I connect a blanket directly to a battery?

Use the charging equipment specified for the product and battery. In most 12V systems a suitable regulator is required between the panel and battery; direct connection can damage equipment or create a safety risk.

Are solar blankets waterproof?

Weather resistance varies by product and does not automatically apply to controllers or connectors. Check the listing and manufacturer instructions, and do not assume the entire system can be left exposed.
